Above are images  that relates to my work. During the 1960s, there was a trend of floral patterns which I have used to create my pattern. People who were in opposition to the Vietnam war were called hippies. During the war, people wanted to spread peace and love and the most representative symbol was a flower. In this era, flower power play an important part because it influenced the fashion style. These floral pattern that I have created will be put on tops which are inspired by 60s. These patterns displayed as much natural beauty as possible. Other style also included bell-bottom jeans, tie-dye and batik fabrics and paisley prints. Hippies believed in displaying natural beauty rather than facing the ugliness of the world. Furthermore, the hippies even inspired the Oriental and African/Middle eastern looks.

Art Basel

Below are photos that I took when I went to Art Basel. These photos are of artists that I think relates to my work for example Op art movement. Op Art become popular during the 1960s by the artist Bridget Riley who created amazing pattern work of black and white shapes of different thickness and positions. These three images below are all optical illusion in front of the eyes and it portrayed the art as it were bulging, twisting or moving. People had seen anything like this in the 1960s and was quite dramatic. All these designs were inspired by past and had an influence of Bridget Riley which made it interesting.

Impressionism

Impressionism was an art movement, which emerged in April 1874 at the Salon. During this time, people broke from the traditional standards or styles.  People want to new ways to expressing their ideas to their societies.  There are few artists who started this movement such as Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Paul Cezanne and Eduard Manet.

The word “impressionism” is used to describe artistic movement.  The first time this term was talk about with reference to art was when a writer was talking about Claude Monet painting called Sunrise (1872, Musee Marmottan, Paris).  The artists were given the name impressionists because they shared similar styles of their works during 1867 to 1886. There are few important artists who were Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Sisley, Morisot and many more after them. Monet and Renoir had painted scenes of La Grenouillere.  These artists wanted a different styles, new technique and paintings with unique subjects. The paintings at those times were approved all by the Academie des Beaux Arts.  Most paintings, which were appreciated, were a scale of tones for forming shapes blacks and browns for making shadows. These paintings were very realistic and indoors most of the time.  Impressionists moved away from traditional art and started painting their subjects outside using natural light. There are certain characteristics that set apart from all other styles of art.

The salon had certain characteristics that need to be followed. If the characteristics aren’t followed, it has been rejected from the salon. The people come to know as there will be a large red “R” on the back of the canvas. It was the frustration because the artist was getting rejected and that is how artists brought the group of impressionist together. Impressionists were serious artists at that time who gave a new meaning to the world by painting people and places in a new ways. When the salon viewed their works, it was assumed that it was messy and unfinished. People who were pregnant weren’t allowed to look at their work, as it would affect their health. Impressionism didn’t rely on realistic depictions.  It was to recognize what the eye perceived and the brain understood were two different things. It considered the effects of light, the passage of time, changes in weather and other shifts in atmosphere in their canvases.

Academie des Beaux Arts rejected tiny brushstrokes of previous artist and celebrated the work with active, stimulating brushwork. They didn’t like traditional linear perspective and avoided the clarity of form that had previously served to distinguish as there was none which matched the characteristics of the Academie des Beaux Arts. Many critics took out fault in impressionist paintings, as they were unfinished appearance and amateurish quality.

Impressionist has portrayed great images of their subjects by using their styles or techniques. The paintings often show us vivid color, great light effects and motion. Painters look at the subjects but not as different areas of color, shapes and light.  In paintings, the brush strokes are quick and non-detailed spots of color.  This really created a fantastic and lively appearance in the world.  These artists didn’t mix colors but instead they had put each color separately onto the canvas so they could show a powerful contrast between primary and complementary colors. For their brush strokes, they used short strokes so the paint couldn’t blend.  Impressionists show us that from a distance, the viewer’s eye would be blurred with colors.  The paintings they did were not as realistic as the classic style of art at that time, they still developed art that showed the sense of light but didn’t portray exact shapes and form.  Claude Monet was one of the known impressionists, he studied the way light affects his subjects.  He studied light by painting his paintings. His each individual scene has different lighting situations.  He painted his work with quick strokes of bright color without blending them together so he could show the spontaneous moving scenes. Monet used all the techniques he knows such as movement, color and light were the most important part of his work.  Claude Monet subject was mainly his wife and his son but the light in those paintings still dominates and impacts the viewer mostly. The way he puts paint makes the picture come alive and active. He used different brushes to create texture and direction. In the painting by Monet gives a sense movement where the wind and sunlight is against each other. One where there is a women’s scarf, her dress and her grass gives a feeling of the breeze blowing to the viewer. He made sure to emphasize the sunlight in the background by setting the people against the sky as to view them from a low perspective.  Monet shows a reflection on the painting by using similar greens (Garden). He used one of the certain characteristics of impressionism to help the viewer to sense the fragrance of the flowers and fresh air. His art was different and beautiful but nowadays he is the most known people of the day.

During this time, there were also changes in the historical cities in Europe. France shift the world from high to low birth rates which was defined by the social historians and was said that it is the prime characteristic of modernity. Another shift was also an enormous rise in the nineteenth century of the previously small class of urban shopkeepers, professionals, small business owners, and other property owners. These people were called bourgeoisie. In the twentieth century, the bourgeoisie were the dominant class as both socially and economically throughout Europe and some of US. The bourgeoise was an early impact on the Impressionism movement. Impressionist was born during this time, Impressionist painted on white canvas or a pale grey or cream background for a lighter, to give a brighter effect. Paris was where new classes of people came to stay and their main focus was with arts. Coming back to the art world, there were big advantages when oil paints came out in tubes, as it is easier to carry around when making nature landscapes and also the artists didn’t need to make it everyday. Oil paints had depth of color as it is slow to dry artist could continue working for paint much longer than other types of paint. It also gives a greater opportunity for artist to blend and layer the colors. Oil paint gave a richness of color as well as a range of tonal transitions and shades. It gives the viewer, transparent effects, matt and gloss finishes which makes it easier for the impressionist to work outside.

The impressionism movement was a movement which affected all types of people. People like Claude Monet and other artists gave a new meaning to the world, the lives of others and in history. Because of these artists, old standards and popular styles of the time were change now as now people can express their thoughts through the use of their talents. This made a big difference in world during in the 19th century and now in the 21st century.
